FUO Engineering Undergraduate Develops Smart Irrigation System

 A 500-level undergraduate student of Federal University Otuoke has developed a smart irrigation system.

Donald Iro, who is a final year student from the Department of Electrical and Electronics, while speaking to our correspondent during the demonstration of his latest project stated that the irrigation system is smart.

"This is a smart irrigation system with real-time information on soil moisture level, temperature, humidity, and motion detection with web integration," he said.

How The Smart Irrigation System Works

The system is designed to monitor the moisture level of the soil and is able to automatically irrigate the farm when the soil moisture is low.

The threshold is set at 30% and once the soil moisture level gets below 30%, there is an onboard alarm system that starts ringing and the administrator also gets a red LED glowing on the mobile app, indicating that the soil moisture is low, simultaneously, the water pump will be activated to irrigate the farm and once the soil moisture has gone above 30%, the alarm shuts off automatically and the pump also shuts down.

Features

The system displays temperature and humidity in real-time.

There is a mobile interface which is on the administrator's smartphone through which he or she can have full access and control over the system.

There is a security feature that detects when there is motion in the farm and once motion is detected, a pop-up notification is sent to the administrator which would be followed by an email.

In order not to get triggered when the administrator is on the farm, there is a virtual switch on the mobile interface which is used to turn the motion sensor on and off.

The entire system is fully autonomous and integrated over the web, so the administrator gets real-time information on events at all times, irrespective of location.
