THE TRAGEDY OF UNEQUAL YOKE IN RELATIONSHIPS

Janet was brought up from a good Christian family where the word of God was taught. She was well mannered, God-fearing and obedient until the time she walked into a love relationship with Paul.

He gradually introduced her to kissing, dirty talk, caressing each other's body and other sinful act. In fact, she gave him unhindered access to her body until they graduate to a dangerous point - bedroom of defilement.

One of her male friends, Alex, warned her about her relationship with Paul. She told him how matured she was and that she knew what she was doing. Before she could realize her state of life, the unequal yoke with Paul cost her something she will never forget - her virginity and a perforated womb. On several occasions, he suggested abortion to her until she became an abortionist which her parents never knew about.

The major evil that is done to many people in their relationship can be traced to their unequal yoke with the wrong person. Your common sense is not wiser than God's instructions in the Holy Bible which stated that you should not be unequally yoked together with an unbeliever.

Who is an unbeliever?

He or she is a church goer but does not believe in God or His word. An unbeliever is also a person whose life doesn't conform to their religious belief. Not everyone in church is a believer. A church comprises of the saints, sinners and those who are neither saint nor sinner.

An unbeliever is someone who habitually practices sin and doesn't see any wrong in it or a need to repent.

Who are you in a relationship with?

Anyone that tells you that sex before marriage is NOT a sin is an unbeliever. Anyone that tells you to get pregnant before marriage is an unbeliever.

Anybody that tells you it's impossible to stay sexually pure is an unbeliever. Anyone that tells your that your relationship will be boring if there's no kissing and the likes in it is an unbeliever.

If he or she tells you to take the relationship to the next level of carnality, sensuality or immorality is an unbeliever.

Anyone that tells you that everyone is doing it, or that remaining sexually pure will give you problem in marriage is an unbeliever.

Anyone that tells you to gather sexual experiences before marriage is an unbeliever. Anyone who tells you to prove love to him or her on a platter of premarital sex is an unbeliever.

Anyone who tells you to 'eat other soup' in the context of extramarital affairs is an unbeliever.

Anyone that tells you that body-no-be-firewood and encourages you to watch pornography or masturbate because it's better than having premarital or extramarital sex is an unbeliever.

If he or she encourages you to date two or more persons so that you can know how people behave is an unbeliever. There's nothing like Christian dating. Dating doesn't exclude sexual immoralities but in friendship where boundaries are set, values and sanity are maintained.

Regardless of his or her position in the church, if he or she pester you for sex, don't be unequally yoked with them.

When a believer yokes together with an unbeliever, sooner or later, the believer will learn the practice of the unbeliever. Yorubas would say, "Aguntan toba baja rin, yo je gbe e", meaning that a sheep that keeps the company of a dog will eat its faeces.

When you notice some inequalities in your belief or values, it's better to break the relationship than to allow emotions carry you into bondage. The major reason why many became victims of premarital sex, extramarital affairs, sexual immoralities and all terrible things done inside relationship is caused by those who they keep as friends.

In a normal sense, you can't walk with the wise and would remain a fool but tendencies are high that if you walk with fools, you'll become foolish.

My brothers and sisters, who are you presently yoked with? It doesn't matter if he or she is a Christian. There are many 'Christians' who are not Christ-like. If their life contradicts your own belief or what is godly, holy or right, desist from such before you become the next victim of relationship issues.
