FUO HOSTING 6TH AFRICAN REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON GOVERNANCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT






It was a great opportunity for intense intellectual exchange at Federal University Otuoke as Academicians converged to contribute and proffer solutions to burning issues of governance and security in Nigeria and Africa.

The forum was the 6th African Regional Research Conference on Governance and Economic Development, which held from 10th – 11th August 2017 with the theme : Governance, National Security and Economic Development : Emerging issues and challenges for Nation Building.


Expected to boost the academic profile of the University, the 2 day conference attracted participants from various Academic disciplines across the nation including teaching Staff of Federal University Otuoke who also contributed via paper presentations and brainstorming sessions.

The Conference Chairman was the VC FUO, Prof Seth Accra Jaja represented by DVC-elect, Prof Teddy Charles Adias.
Chairperson of the LOC for the Conference was Dr Love Arugu (HOD Political Science Dept). Dr John Kalama (Political Science Dept) and Dr Raimi Lasisi (HOD Dept of Sociology and Anthropology) both members.

The Lead Speaker, Prof Benjamin Okaba Director Institute of Foundation Studies, Federal University Otuoke, did justice to the theme “Governance, National Security and Economic Development in Africa : Emerging issues and Challenges for Nation Building.


Prof Okaba in his presentation, X-rayed the reasons why some Nations are Succeeding and others aren’t. He examined the variables and synergy between good governance and economic development, adding that state crafting is a dynamic process sustained by institutions, involving responsible Citizenship.

Dr Marcellina Oforha of the dept of Sociology and Anthropology FUO in her paper titled: Impact of familial Obligations on Emigration Decision of Nigerians in Diaspora’’ recommended that the Nigerian Government make provisions to accommodate her educated professionals within the Country in order to curtail their quest for greener pastures abroad.
 

The 2day Conference featured many paper presentations with topics ranging across climate change, Agriculture, Female Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Public Procurement, Housing, Finance, Interest rates, Monetary Policies etc.
Earlier, the DVC elect Prof Teddy Charles Adias who declared the Conference open on behalf of the VC, stated that FUO is open to partnerships that will project the institution, state and nation. He urged conferees to utilize opportunities provided by the conference.

Others who spoke at the Conference were the LOC Chairman Dr Love Arugu who in her address called for a collective front to tackle issues and Challenges that have hindered Africa.

Director International Institute for Policy review and Development Strategies, Dr Bassey Anam thanked FUO Management for hosting the conference, He expressed optimism that conferees will benefit immensely from the platform provided by the Institute and its development partners.

In his remarks, Dean Faculty of humanities and Social Sciences Prof Diri Tielanyo represented by Dr Francis Oluleye said the theme is apt, considering the present state of the nation.

Tagged “ African Honors Award” recipients at the conference were the VC, DVC elect, Prof Benjamin Okaba, Prof Kabiru Dandago and Engr Simbi Kesiye wWabote.

The Conferees who also paid a courtesy visit to VC Jaja in his office later visited the first oil well in Nigeria, situated at Oloibiri Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa State Nigeria
